In addition to starting a new post at Swansea University in 2018, I had the honour of being invited to the jury for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Reading the submissions was a delight and gave me an opportunity to see the science fiction landscape concentrated in a specific moment of time.

Amongst a number of astonishing entries was the 2019 award winner, Tade Thompson's Rosewater, which you can read more about in The Guardian's article.

The full 2019 shortlist is as follows:

  • Sue Burke, Semiosis

  • Yoon Ha Lee, Revenant Gun

  • Ahmed Saadawi, Frankenstein in Baghdad

  • Simon Stålenhag, The Electric State

  • Tade Thompson, Rosewater

  • Aliya Whiteley, The Loosening Skin

I shall also be serving on the jury for the 2019-2020 round of nominations.
